Maine Narrow Gauge is now offering the POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride in November and December. We hope to see you on the train for a magical trip to the North Pole and back this Christmas season!

2025 OPERATING SEASON

Take a step back in time with a scenic ride on Maine Narrow Gauge!

Our roundtrip train ride is approximately 3 miles long and takes 40 minutes per trip. Along the way, you’ll get scenic vistas of Casco Bay, see exciting new developments along Portland’s waterfront, and pass lighthouses, marinas, forts, public parks, and even a beach! 

Narration is offered onboard and highlights scenic points of interest, as well as describes the unique history of narrow gauge railroading in Maine.

Please Note: On occasion our train schedule may vary due to scheduled events or unforeseen mechanical issues. Please check social media the day of your visit for the most up-to-date information on operations. 

Due to the general nature of our railroad and historic equipment, we cannot guarantee steam or diesel power on any given train. 

All tickets are non-refundable, non-transferrable, and non-exchangeable.

COACH CLASS SERVICE

Experience narrow gauge railroading from a selection of authentic historic passenger railway cars, new-build replicas, and even a 1903-built caboose! Coach Class passenger cars offer a mix of side-facing bench seating and classic 1x1 seating. During the warmer months, open-air passenger cars are offered for unobstructed views and excellent airflow. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in Coach Class.

Coach Class seating is general admission only. Seats cannot be reserved in Coach Class.
Additional ticketing fees apply.

FIRST CLASS SERVICE

Indulge in a First Class experience: ride on newly-restored Combination Car #12 or on the historic Combination Car #15. Take in the best views on the train of Casco Bay from your reserved, individual, padded seat. The First Class experience includes a complimentary snack and beverage from the train station's gift shop for each First Class passenger. Make sure to grab your items before boarding! Your First Class ticket helps fund Maine Narrow Gauge's ongoing preservation efforts for historic rail equipment. *First Class Combine #12 is ADA-compliant and has an onboard wheelchair lift. Passengers using ADA seats in this car are charged the Coach Class fare. Unfortunately, dogs cannot be accommodated in the First Class cars.

First Class seats are individually reserved.
All First Class tickets come with a complimentary snack and beverage.
Proceeds support Maine Narrow Gauge's preservation and education initiatives.

STATION INFORMATION

All trains depart from the platform next to our station building, located at 49 Thames Street, Portland, Maine 04101.

Station Hours (April 6 to May 26):
Saturdays & Sundays
9:30am to 6:00pm

Find ticket sales, gifts and souvenirs, and two single-occupancy restrooms (both equipped with baby changing tables) inside the station.

Parking Info:
Please note that Maine Narrow Gauge cannot provide or advise on parking. Hourly street parking and paid lots are available in a short walking distance from the station. Visit PortlandMaine.gov to learn about parking in the City of Portland.

Guests in need of mobility assistance:
Our platform is equipped with an ADA access lift that can accommodate wheelchairs and powerchairs. Please inform the Ticket Agent or Conductor when you arrive if you would like this service.
